How I Complete My Work
My work process is very methodical and specific, with the goal of creating a finished product that is of the utmost quality. My personal mantra is: quality requires extra effort.
Speed vs. Quality
Some writers are more concerned with speed than quality. I believe speed is important, but not at the expense of excellence. Therefore I will not provide a quote that does not allow sufficient time for quality reviews, edits, and other measures to safeguard the professionalism of the work. This type of planning ensures you are getting what you paid for. Would you want to spend $1000 on copy that doesn't improve your bottom line?
What to Expect from Me
My general work process is efficient, but thorough. I start by gathering as much research and knowledge as I can, then work from there. Good writing is 75% research/understanding/planning, and 25% actual writing. In general I will perform my work in this manner:
1. Obtain all research, materials, and existing documentation. Or, if applicable, obtain access to the product.
2. Interview subject matter experts via email, instant messenger, SKYPE, or another agreed upon means of communication. I generally do not require demos of products nor extensive conversations; I simply need access to information and the ability to ask questions.
3. Plan the layout and content. I may consult with the client at this time if appropriate, to ensure the proposed content meets the business objectives, before continuing forward on the project.
4. Create an initial draft.
5. Perform re-writes and editing. For some writers this step is an after thought, but that is a huge mistake. In all my years of writing experience, 95% of the time the first (and often the second) draft is still ineffective and is not worthy of publication. The only exception is in the case of technical writing, which does not generally require lengthy re-writes (as there is little consideration of business/sales strategy in that type of document) but does require editing.
6. Perform two final read-throughs to check for remaining problems.
7. Submit the finished document.
